Cartoon character tattoo behind the ear
Traditional · Neck · Mixed · Photo
A small cartoon figure with round glasses and a wide-eyed expression sits beneath a red and white striped element, shown upside down in the frame. The bold black outlines and flat fills of red, white and skin tones give it a graphic, illustrative look. The tattoo sits behind the ear against dark hair, with a hand with white nails visible at the right edge.

The bells at Little Haddow had been ringing since noon, and by three o'clock nobody could find Piers Gorringe, the groom's cousin, who had promised to carry the cake up the lane. Mrs Ashby sent her grandson to the orchard. The boy came back saying the cake was sitting on the wall by the well, and nobody was near it.

The bride's mother said the Gorringes always did this. Every wedding someone wandered off, and every wedding the family searched the wrong places, the sheds, the pond, the church crypt. Old Nan Fairweather, who had lived at the end of the lane for ninety years, said you did not look for a man who did not want finding. You looked for the striped cap instead. He never took it off, she said, and he wore his round spectacles even in the rain.
So they looked for the cap. The children went through the marquee, the vicar searched the tithe barn, and the bride, still in her veil, walked the field edge with her skirts bunched in one fist. She found the cap in the hedge by the stile, hung upside down on a bramble, and beneath it Piers, folded small, grinning up at her as though he had been waiting all afternoon for someone to notice.
"You've been hiding in plain sight," she said. "I've walked past you every year." He pulled the cap back over his ears and asked whether the cake was still standing. It was. She laughed, took his arm, and they went up the lane together, the cap bobbing ahead of them above the hedges like a flag somebody had forgotten to take down.
