Circular forest tattoo on upper chest

Chest · Colour · Photo

A small round tattoo sits on the upper chest just below the shoulder, showing a textured scene of dark branching shapes that look like trees. The ink is brown and sepia toned, with lighter areas breaking up the fine detail. The subject is framed against a grey off-shoulder top and a pale background, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

The barge Tern came down the Trent in October with a round glass in the hold, wrapped in sacking and tied with cord. Old Hannah Pell had bought it from a widow in Gainsborough for three shillings, and nobody on the towpath could tell her why it was worth more. Her son Edwin asked about it every night at the stove, the way boys ask things they don't want answered.

The glass showed a wood when the lamp was turned low. Oaks leaned over a path, birches stood pale at the edges, and somewhere in the dark brown middle there was a deer that never moved. Hannah said it was the wood her grandmother had walked as a girl, before the enclosures took it. Each night the barge drifted past a lock, and each night the trees in the glass crowded a little nearer the path, until Edwin swore the deer had turned its head.

At Keadby the lock-keeper offered two pounds and a sack of flour for the glass. Hannah said no. In the morning the sacking lay empty on the floorboards, and in its place was a round of dry bark no wider than a plate, with the same branching pattern pressed into it in ink that would not wash off the fingers. They rowed back up to Gainsborough in the rain, and the widow looked at the bark for a long time before she shut her door on them.

Edwin kept the bark on the cabin windowsill after that. Some mornings he swore the birches had grown a leaf overnight, and Hannah never told him he was wrong.
