Semicolon tattoo on a shoulder
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A small, solid black semicolon sits on the upper shoulder of a person whose face is turned away from the camera. The linework is simple and clean, with no shading, and the mark is the only ink in view. The plain grey backdrop and soft natural light keep attention on the tattoo, with a white loose top draped off the opposite shoulder.

The steward of Harrowdene never finished a sentence in his life, or so the village said, and I believed them until I found his ledger wedged behind a loose stone in the chapel. Every entry stops at a semicolon. The rain has not let up since Tuesday; the mere is over the causeway again. Bread is short at the mill; the miller's boy has gone to the coast. He had a habit of leaving the second half for later, the way some men leave a door on the latch.

I came to the castle that winter to count what the damp had left, and I took his habit up as a kind of duty. Each morning I opened the ledger, read where he had broken off, and wrote the rest. I was careful. I never made my clauses rhyme with his. The roof came down over the great hall in March, and I kept writing in the dry corner of the scullery, ink thick with cold, joining sentence to sentence like a man laying stones without mortar.
In April a girl from the village came up the hill with a satchel and asked whether the steward had died a sad death. I showed her the book. She ran her thumb over the marks and said, very seriously, that he had not been sad at all, only unwilling to close the day. Then she asked why I had never stopped a sentence properly. I had no answer ready, so I took the pen and wrote one last line in my own hand: the swans came back in May; the walls are still standing; I am still here.
