Dreamcatcher and roses on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A dreamcatcher with a fine woven web, a blue-tipped bead and two red roses with green leaves sits on the outer thigh. Black and grey feathers curl off to the right, with soft smoky grey shading fading into the skin behind them. The colour is limited to the roses, while the rest of the design is rendered in shaded greys against the skin tone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wind off the north side of Skerra came in fast that spring, and it took the washing, the thatch and once a whole hen, so Old Ada Veitch strung her nets from the rowan by the well and did not sleep for worrying over them. Her grandson Tam said the nets were foolish. Nothing that fine, he said, could hold anything.

She wove a hoop of ash the width of a cartwheel and laced it with sinew and gut so tight the light came through in threads. In the middle she set a blue glass bead, salvaged from a wreck off the Hollow Stacks, because blue was the colour of the sea that had given it up. Then she hung the rings from the rowan and waited for the dreams that came in on the wind.

They came as they always did, grey and stringy, the way fog lifts off a warm field. Most of them slid through the web and went on out to sea. The heavy ones, the ones full of sorrow, caught and stayed, and in the mornings Ada unpicked them one by one and buried them under the roses she grew against the wall. The roses had come up red that year, which surprised her, since the soil was thin and the wind was bitter.

On the last night of the gales a gull came down half drowned, one wing hanging like a torn sail. Ada took its feathers while it still lived and tied them to the lower hoop, black and grey, and the wind found them and curled them out toward the mainland. Tam slept that night with his mouth open and dreamed of nothing at all. Ada hung the net, went to bed, and left the window open.
