Circular Gallifreyan-style line design

Black and grey · Flash

The image is a black line drawing on a white background, showing a large circle with a double outer ring enclosing many smaller circles, semicircles and straight connecting lines. The linework is uniform in weight with no shading, and the design is evenly spread across the circle. It reads as a stencil-style design sheet rather than a photograph of skin.

The message came up the Kennet in the bottom of a tin of tea, wrapped in greaseproof paper and wedged under the lid. Nobody at the lock house could read it. Mrs Pargeter swore it was Welsh, and Dennis at the boatyard reckoned it was a pattern for bathroom tiles. I took it because I had the only narrowboat on the cut with a spare bunk and nothing waiting for me at the end of the week.

The script was all circles. Some were plain, some had a dot set inside like a pupil, and some had a half-moon hooked onto their edge as if something had bitten them. Straight lines ran between them, deliberate as mooring ropes running from bollard to bollard. I spent three nights under the cabin lamp with a pencil and a jam jar of cold coffee, guessing that the dots were vowels and the moons were stops, until on the seventh night the pattern opened up like a lock gate and the words came through.

It was not a love letter or a threat. It was a set of instructions, plain as a shipping note. Go to the sixth lock at first light. Open the north paddle only. Do not look down until the water is still. Below that, in the smallest circle on the page, someone had drawn a boat with its bow turned back towards the village.

I went at dawn with the mist lying on the towpath like wet wool. The paddle was already loose on its spindle, as if someone had oiled it the night before. The water settled. Beneath the surface, pale against the silt, lay a tin box with a lid as round as a coin, and when I lifted it out the sun came over the reeds and the first thing I read was my own name, written in circles.
