Tulley died in February with the die still locked in the strongbox. On the night of the first gale, Dilys opened it alone and found the cutting wrong. One dot sat a hair left of where his had always been. She pressed it into wax anyway, because the ledger was due and the clerks were waiting. The harbour bell stopped mid-toll. In the morning the customs men counted their stamps and found every one of them honest. Dilys stamped the rest of the year's papers with the crooked seal and never once corrected it.
