The ferryman at Scarrow will not carry the seal across the water until you have drawn it correctly, so you sit on the harbour wall with your mother's brass compass and a pencil worn down to the wood. Ottilie Vane, who keeps the lamp above the slip, has told you the rules twice. Start at the top of the rim. Place the small circles where the gulls stand. Leave the four bites out of the edge exactly where the tide has never reached, or the bay will forget which way is out.

The arcs are harder. Each one must hook into the next like a bolt into a lock, and the dots must be counted, not guessed, because the dots are the hours the island has been keeping for itself. You rub out the third cluster four times. The fishermen pass behind you carrying nets that smell of tar and say nothing, which is how you know you are close.

When the last dot goes in, the pencil stops feeling like a pencil. The lines hold their shape on the paper without drying, and the harbour goes quiet in the way it does before a boat is coming, though none is. Ottilie lights the lamp in the middle of the afternoon. Out past the breakwater the water draws back in one long, patient breath, and the ferry, which has been tied to the post since morning, slowly turns its bow towards you and waits.
