Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A bold stylised letter K sits at the centre of a thick black ring. The words are hand-lettered in uneven black capitals that follow the curve of the circle. The design is entirely black ink on a white background, with strong contrast and no shading.

The last train out of Hallam Junction left at six, and the man in the grey coat was aboard before the guard had raised his flag. I watched him from the parcels office, where I'd spent eleven years stamping crates with a brass K the old company had cut for its consignments. He didn't look back. Men who are running never do. They only glance sideways for the next platform.

Twenty minutes later a rider came in off the moor road with no luggage and a face like weathered rope. Ned Oakes, the stationmaster called him, though nobody in Hallam had ever seen him sign a name. He bought a single to Carrow Flats and pressed a coin on the counter. Then he asked whether the line ran straight across the salt pans. I said it did. He said that was a shame, because straight lines were how a man got caught.

I took the Thursday goods out to Carrow because the grey coat had left a ticket stub on the bench, folded into the shape of a K and pencilled with a time that had already gone. The flats are a grey crust that cracks under the sun and throws the light back like a mirror. By noon the wagons were ticking and the coal dust had got into my teeth.

The train stopped at the water tower, where the rails simply gave up in the heat. The grey coat sat on the buffers with his hat tipped down, and he watched Oakes come walking up the track like a man with all day. I pressed the brass K into my palm and held it up so they could both see the mark. Oakes laughed. Then the grey coat stood, and the two of them set off together across the white, a long way from any timetable.
