Circular quote around a pink flower on the stomach
Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a pink flower with a green stem at the centre, with shading in the petals and a fine outline. Black lettering in a serif-style font runs around a circle that encloses the flower, with some words upside down from this viewpoint. The photo is taken straight on at close range, with the skin tone, a green waistband and a little background in frame.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the goat. I'll tell you about the thistle-puff that grew by the cistern at Harrow Gate, the one as pink as a boiled prawn and no bigger than a thumbnail when it first split the cracked stone. Nobody watered it. The well-keeper's boy tugged at it every morning to see if it had died, and every morning it stood there stubborn, its green neck bent like a question.

Now the city had a rich man called Ostrin, who kept a garden of white peacocks and marble urns, and he had decided the whole ward would be paved over for a processional road. Engineers came with measuring cords. They knocked the cistern wall down with rams, and the little thistle-puff went flat under a cartload of rubble, or so everyone said.
Here is the part the cart-men never tell. Its seed had already gone. A puff that size carries a hundred seeds, each with its own fine parachute, and the wind off the cistern lifted them over the wall, over the cords and the rams, over Ostrin's peacocks, and dropped them into a crack in the processional road that was never finished. Three summers later the road split open in one place only, and a pink head nodded out of it, and Ostrin's own steward had to walk round it every day for the rest of his life.
So when someone tells you small things count for nothing, think of the seed that went over the wall, and the stone that gave way to it.
