Daisy with stem on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A daisy with a shaded centre and layered petals is tattooed on the inner forearm, with a thin stem extending towards the wrist and two small leaves. The petals use grey shading and fine outlines, giving them a soft, dimensional look. The arm rests on a grey upholstered surface, with a window and soft daylight in the background.

Sit closer, the lamps on Vicar Lane are lying to us tonight, so mind your footing. You'll want to hear about the daisy, because it grew where nothing else would, in the crack between the platform edge and the old brick at Leeds Wellington, and a woman called Maud Harker found it on a Tuesday in February when the sleet was going sideways.

Maud sold newspapers from a cart under the bridge. She had no garden and no patience for flowers, and she said so to anyone who stopped. But every morning she crouched and pulled the weeds from around that one white head, and every morning the head turned a little to follow the first grey light coming off the canal.
Then the council sent a van and a man in a yellow coat who meant to pour tar over the whole arch. Maud did not shout. She went home, came back with a jam jar of water and a spoonful of her own tea leaves, and sat on an upturned crate until the man gave up for the night. He called her daft. She said the daisy had kept its face to the lamp all winter, and a thing that stubborn deserved a witness.
The tar never came. By April the daisy had seeded itself along three feet of wall, and Maud was buried with a single stem tucked inside her coat. Mind the step at the top, love. The light's coming.
