Colour tattoo of a yellow dandelion clock with green leaves and a handwritten quote running down the calf, in a botanical style.

Dandelion and script quote on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a dandelion seed head in yellow with a thin green stem and two serrated green leaves, with dark linework and small green splatter dots around the design. A line of black cursive script, reading what I need is the dandelion in the spring, runs diagonally up the right side of the leg. The leaves and flower are shaded with soft colour gradients on a plain light background.

The hatch sighs open and the wind that comes through it smells of nothing, which is how you know the filters are still doing their job. You step onto the grey shelf of the terrace, boots ringing on old grating, and you do not look at the sky yet. Ilse taught you that. Look at the ground first, she said. The ground is honest.

Along the south wall, between the cracked panels, a line of green has pushed up through the grit. Not much. Four leaves cut like torn paper, serrated at the edges as if a saw had learnt manners. At the top of one stem sits a yellow head, open and flared, its rays bent outward as though it has just heard good news.

Nobody has seen a flower up here in eleven years. The ship's log files it as a fault in the algae vats, a mislabelled cutting from the seed bank. Ilse would have said it was a mistake that refused to be corrected. Behind you the hatch clangs shut and the comm crackles with your name, someone wanting the weekly yield figures. You do not answer.

You take the small knife from your belt and cut the stem low, the way Ilse showed you, and fold the bloom into the pouch against your chest where the seed samples sleep. Then you press two leaves flat against the grating and hold them there, counting your own breaths, until the cold metal under your palm starts to feel like soil.
