Lettering · Ribs · Mixed · Photo

A dandelion seed head sits at the top of a long stem that runs diagonally across the side of the torso, with a line of cursive script crossing beneath it. The seed head is shaded with soft purple and pink tones, while the stem, outline and lettering are in fine black and grey linework. The photograph is taken close up at an angle, with a purple garment visible at the left edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The spray van was already idling by the churchyard wall when Hannah Fisk came running up the verge with a dandelion clock held out in front of her like a lantern. I had the lance in one hand and the council's orders in the other, and I told her the weedkiller went down before the school bell, same as every Thursday since before she was born. She looked at the orders, then at me, and said a clock was not a weed. It was a clock. You were supposed to blow on it and tell the time.

I should have driven on. Instead I sat on the tailgate and watched her blow. The seeds lifted off the grey stalk, a hundred tiny parachutes, and went over the wall into the allotments and across the lane where the new houses were going up. She counted them out loud. Forty-one, forty-two. Each one, she said, was a wish somebody had made and not yet finished making.

I hadn't made a wish in years. The job had got in the way, the way spray gets in the way of everything. That afternoon I walked the verge with the lance switched off and found the seed heads the mowers had missed, and I left every one standing, a row of them along the kerb like stopped clocks waiting for someone to wind them.

The inspector came in October and asked why the verge looked like a hay field. I told him a girl had asked nicely. He wrote something down, then walked out into the middle of it with his hands in his pockets, and when the wind got up the seeds went past him in a rush, and he didn't say another word about it.
