Sunflower with script on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large sunflower with yellow, orange and amber petals and a grey textured centre sits on the shoulder, with purple shading beneath the petals. Above it, the words You Are My Sunshine run in black cursive script. The linework is dark and defined, and the colour is softly blended into the petals, with the photo framed close on the shoulder and upper chest.

Every morning the sunflowers in Maud Ferrier's allotment turned their heads to follow the sun over the chapel roof, and every morning her grandson Tobias walked the rows to see which ones had kept their promise. He was nine that summer and sure the flowers were lazy. Maud said they only waited for the light to be worth turning for.

The drought came in July. The stream behind the allotment shrank to a green thread, and the neighbours stopped talking over the fence about anything but water. Maud gave the sunflowers her bathwater and her teapot dregs, and still the tallest of them drooped at noon like a bonnet on a hook. Tobias sat by it with a tin cup and sang the only tune he knew all the way through, which was the one about the sunshine, because his grandmother had sung it to him in the bath and it had never once failed to make him laugh.
In the first week of August the rain came in one grey night, and by morning the tall sunflower had lifted its face and turned, slow as a clock hand, toward the kitchen window where Maud was standing with the kettle. Tobias pressed his nose to the glass. She laughed and put the cup down on the sill, and he never afterwards could say which of them had been the sun.
