Circular script and I love you design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black single-line drawing of a circle containing overlapping smaller circles, straight lines and dots, with the handwritten words I Love You beneath it. The linework is thin and even, and the design sits centred on a plain white square shown on a dark wood-grain background. The image is a design drawing rather than a photograph of skin.

The bell over the chandlery door gave its double knock, which meant a boat had come in early, so I left the escapement half-fitted on the bench and went down the hill in my apron. Sim Pardoe was on the quay with his cap pushed back, holding a folded square of card as if it might blow into the harbour.

The card was a dial drawn in ink, a ring with smaller rings tangled inside it like coins spilt on a table, and straight lines cutting through the lot. Father taught me that circle script when I was nine, a way of setting down words by where the marks sat and how far they sat from the edge. Sim learned it from me the winter his mother was ill, so we could talk in the post office without the clerk reading over our shoulders. He had got every mark right, but he had written the last words plainly underneath in his own loopy hand, because he said the cipher took too long for the thing he most needed to say.
I read the circle twice with my finger tracing the rings, then looked up and gave him the sum: the tide turned at four, the lamp would be lit by six, and the dial said he was to come home by the second bell. He laughed at me for reading the sea like a timetable. I told him the sea was only ever a clock that had lost its face.
We walked back up with the gulls arguing over the fish boxes. In the shop I set the card in the window where the afternoon light could reach it, so that every morning until he came back, the ink would throw its small shadows across the brass.
