Infinity symbol with script love and three birds
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A black line drawing on a plain white board shows an infinity symbol with the word love written in cursive script along its lower right loop. Three small bird silhouettes rise from the top left of the loop. The lines are thin and even, the design is solid black with no shading, and the plain white background gives it strong contrast.

Nell had worked the lock at Kingsholme Junction since the spring the water froze, and she knew the canal's habits better than her own. It ran out from the basin, bent round the old mill pond, and came back on itself in a long loop before it found the river again, so every boat had to cross its own wake where the two arms met. Her father had called it the knot. He said a family was like that too, always passing back over the same water.

The Maudlin came round the bend on a Tuesday with fresh paint on her roof and a boy at the tiller who could not stop looking at the sky. Three starlings lifted off the towpath railings as she came in, wheeled once over the water and settled on the balance beam above the bottom gate. Nell said nothing. The boy said the birds were following the boat, and she told him birds followed nothing but bread.
Her father's barge had carried the same name and the same white lettering on the cabin side. Before he died he had painted a small word under the brass tiller plate, the only word he ever put on anything that was not a bill: love, in curling letters, so whoever leaned on the wood read it every time they steered. Nell had never painted over it, though the red had faded to the colour of old brick.
She opened the bottom paddles and let the water drop, and the boat sank slowly in the chamber until the boy could see the old towpath below. The birds rose again, three dark shapes against the mill chimney, and turned in a wide loop over the junction as if they were tracing the start of the figure. Then they flew back the way they had come, over the water toward the basin, and Nell wound the gate shut behind them.
