You will want the truth about the picnic, so here it is. Your mother packed the wicker basket the night before, two bottles wrapped in tea towels, and we carried it up the hill to the old oak in Hollin Field as if we were twenty again. Ted insisted on bringing the striped blanket from the back of the Morris. He said it had seen more of our courting than the chapel ever did. You know how he talks.

The speeches were given on that blanket, which nobody had planned for the wedding. Your cousin Sam stood on the basket lid to read his poem, and it cracked under him. We laughed until Father Doyle came over with his hat in his hands. Somewhere in the middle of it Ted pulled a folded paper from his jacket and read out the line he had written for the bride, all about how love should let go freely across the universe and still find its own way home. He said he had nicked it from a song, and then he blushed like a boy.

I have been thinking about that since. Ted is in the ground now, and I still think of him whenever the sun drops low over that field. Please come to Hollin on Saturday. Bring the photographs. I want to see your face when you hold the one of the wine bottle lying on its side in the grass, because it was the last thing we looked at before the rain came.
