Script lettering looped in a circle on a leg

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a loop of cursive script words wrapped around a near-circular path on bare skin. The fine black linework is crisp and even, with the lettering reading clockwise around the shape and the words partly legible. The photograph is warm-toned and shows a bare leg with a picnic blanket, basket and bottle in the background.

You find the bottle at low tide, wedged between two black rocks beneath the lamp room, its cork gone soft with salt. Inside, a sheet of notepaper is rolled tight and tied with fishing line. The ink has bled in places, but the hand is careful and patient, every line curling back on itself so the sentences seem to chase their own tails around the page.

You carry it up the hundred and twelve steps and spread it on the chart table beside the logbook. The first line loops round the edge of a pencilled circle, and you have to turn the paper in your hands to follow it, the way you turn a compass card to find north. Whoever wrote it was not thinking about shipping lanes. They were thinking about a kitchen in Hartlepool and a man named Owen Teale who had gone out on the Brightwater and never come back to it.

Forty years of keeping this light have taught you that the sea does not read letters. Still, the lamp needs winding and the glass needs wiping, and all the while you find yourself reading the circle aloud under your breath, word by word, until the sentences stop sounding like a plea and start sounding like a plain instruction to keep moving because the light is still turning.

At dusk you climb back up with the note, unroll it on the iron rail, and let the wind have it. It lifts, turns once in a tight ring above the gallery, and drifts towards the water where the beam sweeps. You watch it go, then climb down to light the lamp, and the first pale sweep catches the paper just before the swell takes it under.
