The clock stopped at twenty past four in November. Everyone had an opinion: the vet, the lad from the feed merchant, the auctioneer who wanted it for scrap. The glass is cracked and the hands hang at angles like folded arms. Behind the pendulum someone long dead scratched a ring of arcs and small circles, a seal with one straight line cutting across it like a fence post. You have spent three nights with a jeweller's glass and greaseproof paper, tracing it.
At midnight you find the escapement tooth that has bent just enough to snag. You ease it back with a pair of tweezers, breathing through your teeth, and the pendulum swings once, then twice, then keeps going. Ruth comes to the doorway in her dressing gown. 'Well,' she says. 'It's not broken, then.'
You tell her it never was, only stubborn, the same as the pair of you. Outside the wind leans on the byre. You wind the key the full ten turns, and the house starts counting again.
