City skyline and face double exposure on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's face, with lips and nose visible, is blended into a city skyline that includes a tall Art Deco tower. Barbed wire and small birds cross the upper section above the skyline. The shading is fine and detailed in greys and black on a single arm, with bold block lettering partly visible at the bottom of the frame.

Ruth Adair had run the brass lift in the Meridian Building for nineteen years, and she knew the top floors sounded different when the wind came off the river. Every morning at seven she opened the gate on the ninth floor and listened for the pigeons on the roof, which the caretaker had tried for a decade to keep off the cornice with wire. The wire never worked. It only gave them somewhere to sit in a row, like men waiting for a bus that never came.

Teddy Vance, the boy from the bakery on Sayer Street, climbed the service stairs each day before school with a paper bag of crumbs. Ruth told him the roof was not allowed. He told her the birds did not read notices. On the third Tuesday of March he stopped coming, and the caretaker said his mother had moved them to Leeds without a word to anyone.
That week Ruth cleaned the lobby photograph of the building's opening day, 1931, because nobody else would. A switchboard girl named Isabel Marsh stood beside the revolving doors, and when the glass caught the afternoon light, her face seemed to lose its edges and settle into the towers behind her. Tucked behind the frame was a ledger slip in pencil: Keep the lift running for whoever climbs.
So on Friday Ruth rode to the roof and pushed open the gate. The birds rose off the wire all at once, a grey noise against the sky, and below her the whole city shone in the glass as if it had been waiting to be counted.
