City skyline tattoo on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows a small black city skyline tattoo on the inner wrist, with tall towers above a horizontal band that suggests water. The ink is dark and solid with fine detail in the buildings, and the shapes are set against a pale skin tone. Behind the arm, a hazy blue sky, a calm stretch of water and a distant city skyline fill the frame.

Dilys Haworth had been recording the Carrow Quay skyline for the harbour board since the year the ferry stopped running on Sundays, and she had never once drawn it the same way twice. Each Friday she sat on the seawall with a board on her knees and a 2B pencil, and each Friday the towers had moved a little: a crane that had gone, a glass block that had gone up in a season and gone grey in the next.

Her nephew Tomasz brought her flask and teased her about it. "Nobody reads these," he said, peering over her shoulder at the tracing paper. "The council has photographs." She let him talk. The photographs, she said, showed what the buildings looked like. Her drawings showed where the buildings met the water, which was the only thing the board had ever asked her to keep.
Tomasz noticed the reflections first. Every sheet had them: the towers turned upside down in the flat tide, drawn in heavy strokes so dark they nearly bled through the paper. "Why so black?" he asked. "Because the water is darker than anyone expects," she said, and went back to the fourth tower, the one with the spire, due to be finished by autumn.
In October the board sent a young man with a tablet to check her figures. He stood where she stood, looked up at the skyline, then down at her sheet, and frowned at the last tower, which she had left as an outline with no windows. "You haven't finished it," he said. Dilys shrugged. "It isn't built yet. The water has it already."
