Small bicycle tattoo on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised hand with a small, simple bicycle drawn in black ink sits on the inner wrist. The bicycle has thin, even outlines with no shading, and the ink is crisp against the skin. The blurred city skyline and pale blue sky with scattered clouds fill the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had been pushing the same green bicycle up the hill from the canal for eleven years, and it had never once been fixed properly. The bell had seized, the chain ran loose, and the back wheel wobbled like a man leaving the pub. She kept it anyway. Her father had built it from two frames and a box of spares in a Leeds garage, and she could not picture riding anything else.

On the Tuesday the chain snapped outside the cathedral, and a lad from the chip shop, still wearing his paper hat, offered to carry it. He talked the whole way to the arch under the railway, where Ada kept a bench, a vice and a tin of loose bearings. He told her he had lost a race in 2009 by the width of one wheel and had never forgiven the rider in yellow. Ada said nothing. She was watching his hands, which were quick and certain, turning the cranks as if they already knew the answer.

It took him forty minutes. He replaced the chain with one from a drawer of mismatched links, trued the back wheel by bending it a fraction against the stand, and then, because the bell still stuck, he took the whole thing apart with a knife and a good deal of swearing. When he finally rang it, the note was clear, high and surprised, like a shout across a valley.

Ada paid him two pounds and a biscuit. That evening she rode up to the ridge, where the towers of the city shimmered in the haze below her, and she rang the bell twice just to hear it work. Then she freewheeled down into the streetlights with both hands off the bars.
