Compass rose and bird on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm and wrist are raised against a view of a dense city skyline with tall office towers. The tattoo is a compass rose with N, E, S and W points marked, drawn in black linework with a small bird silhouette near the east point. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the design is centred on the wrist.

The bird would not leave the sill until Ansel Marr had turned the box the right way round. Three times he set it facing the river, and three times the grey hen hopped back inside and ruffled herself at him, as if the fault were his and not hers. He had bought the brass compass from a ship's chandler in Wapping for two shillings. It had never once pointed where he wanted, but it pointed true, which was more than he could say for the men who ran the firm downstairs.

Beyond the parapet the city ran off in every direction, towers of soot-coloured stone stacked like letters nobody had opened. Ansel had kept birds on the roof of the Halvard Building since the war, sending notes down to the insurance clerks on Ludgate whenever the telephone lines went dead after dark. The grey hen was the best of the loft. Three weeks back she had brought home a reply folded into her leg band, written in a hand so small he needed a glass to read it: the tide had turned, and the office was shut.
He wrote his own note on tissue paper, rolled it tight, and slid it under the band. Come home, it said. Mind the wind at the corners. Then he lifted her into the air, and she clattered once over the dome before settling on a course that was not quite north, but east of it, where the sun would sink over the water.
He watched until she was a fleck against the glass. When he looked down, the compass lay open on the parapet with its needle trembling and then stilling. He picked it up, slid it into his coat, and left the sill empty for the next bird that needed a direction.
