City skyline line tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A clenched fist is raised in the foreground, with a black line tattoo of a city skyline running along the forearm. The tattoo is drawn as a thin, continuous outline tracing the tops of tall buildings, with no shading or fill. The black and white photograph shows a cloudy sky, a dark lake and a city skyline behind the arm.

Mrs Okonedo's art room still smells of turpentine and damp cardboard, and the reunion committee has pinned the old class photographs to the corkboard as if the eleven-year-olds in them might be persuaded to come back. You find yourself near the end of the row, squinting into a sun that was never there. Someone has written "Lost Property" underneath in marker.

Nobody remembers the trick except you. Every Friday she gave the class a sheet of cartridge paper and one challenge: draw the far bank of the river in a single line, without lifting the pencil. You were the only one who ever finished. Your line ran up and down the page like a heart monitor, climbing the mill chimneys, dropping into the gasworks, and coming back to the point where it began. She pinned yours above the sink for a whole term.
Ruth from the year above, now selling conservatories in Harrogate, finds you beside the squash table. She asks whether you still do the line thing. You tell her you tried it once on the back of a bus ticket and gave up at the cathedral. She laughs and says the river was always easier than the sky.
On the way out you stop at the window. Beyond the car park the old reservoir lies flat and grey under the same heavy clouds, and the town's few towers stand along the far shore. You take a biro from your coat and, without thinking, begin tracing them on the back of the invitation, never lifting the nib, until the outline reaches the edge of the card and turns back on itself.
