City skyline with spire and mountain on forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo depicts a city skyline of tall buildings, with a tall spire rising near the centre left and a mountain peak behind the towers on the right. Fine shading and soft highlights give the buildings depth and a misty background, and the work is shown in two photos of the same forearm. The piece uses only black ink and grey tones, with smooth gradients across the sky and the skyline.

The mate had counted the days on the forecastle wall for eleven months, and by the time the Marigold raised land the count had worn to a smudge. Old Tobiah Greer said the coast looked wrong. Nobody argued. Fog had sat on them since the Horn, and everything looked wrong that spring.

Then the fog pulled off the water like a sheet from a bed, and there it stood: a steel needle taller than any mast, rising over the towers, and behind it a mountain with its shoulders in cloud. Tobiah had told his daughter about that needle when she was small. He had promised her the mountain would still be there even if the rest was not. She had laughed at him, and he had let her.
The quay was full of strangers in coats cut to a shape he did not know. A boy with a handcart asked where he had come from. Tobiah said the Marigold, and the boy laughed and said nobody had sailed that name since his grandfather was in short trousers. Tobiah climbed the hill towards Marrow Lane. Glass towers stood where the cottages had been, holding the sky in their faces, and the lane was gone under a road that hummed.
He sat on a bench until the lamps came on. A woman sat down beside him with a bag of chips and asked if he was lost. He said he was looking for his daughter's house. She followed his gaze to the mountain, pale now against the dark, and said the old ones still called it by the name the sailors gave it, and that it was the only thing in the town that had not moved. Tobiah nodded and found, to his surprise, that it was enough to be going on with.
