City skyline and heartbeat line on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo runs along the inner forearm, showing a city skyline with a tall tower topped by a saucer shaped structure. The skyline is drawn with fine outlines and light sketchy hatching, and it merges into a spiky waveform line that extends to both ends of the design. The image is in black and grey, with a plain grey t-shirt sleeve and a blurred dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You buy the reel from a man selling cassettes under a tarpaulin at the back of Harbour Street market, where the rain comes in sideways off the water and the awnings sag like wet sails. He wants four pounds. You give him three and a bent spoon, which he takes without looking, because he has been here longer than the gulls and knows what a fair trade costs in weather like this.

Back in the flat above the chandler's, you thread the tape onto a machine that smells of hot dust. The recording is of the tower on the hill, the one with the saucer balanced on its neck, and the sound a city makes when it listens to itself: trams, a bell from the ferry, somebody laughing in a language you almost know. Someone has pencilled a date on the label. Underneath, in smaller letters, the word Pulse.

The meter needle jumps every time the bell rings. You draw what you see on squared paper, peaks rising into spires, flat stretches settling into roofs, and the saucer as one careful circle at the top. By midnight the sheet is a line of hills and towers that keeps going past the edge of the page. The rain has stopped. Over the hum of the amp you can hear your own heart, and for once it is keeping time with something outside you.

At dawn you carry the sheet back down to the market, where the tarpaulin man is still hunched over his crates. You unfold it on the wet table. He studies it for a long while, then taps the highest peak with one finger and asks whether the tower is still humming. You tell him yes, you can hear it from here.
