City skyline with Statue of Liberty on wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a city skyline with a statue silhouette at its centre sits on the inner wrist. The buildings and statue are drawn in thin, unshaded outline with clean, even linework. The photograph is black and white, with chain bracelets on the left and leafy plants blurred in the background.

The ferry was already sounding its horn when Nell reached the slip, so she ran the last stretch with the sketchbook pressed flat against her ribs. Her brother had asked her, in the letter that came in March, to draw him the city as she saw it from the water, because the photographs in the newspaper were all lit up and nobody could tell where the buildings stopped and the sky began.

She took the upper deck and wedged herself by the rail. The towers came up out of the haze in order, the way she had learned them from her father's knee: the stubby ones first, then the tall grey blade in the middle, then the green figure out in the harbour with her arm raised and the torch held high. Nell had never once managed to draw the torch right. Every attempt looked like a candle someone had dropped.

Halfway across, the deck lurched in a swell and her pencil skidded off the page. She laughed, and an old man beside her said the water was calmer than it had been all week, which was the sort of thing people said to strangers on boats. She tried again, using only the outline, no shading, trusting the lines to hold their own against the light.

When she stepped off at the far side, the sketch was on the back of a ferry ticket, the skyline no bigger than her thumb. She left it unfolded on the table of the café by the terminal, where the waiter would see it, and wrote her brother a short note saying the torch was wrong, and that she had decided to keep it that way.
