City skyline with ferris wheel on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-needle style outline of a city skyline runs across the inner forearm, including a ferris wheel on the left, several tall spires and a lattice tower, with two hot air balloons above on the right. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The design is set horizontally along the forearm, with silver charm bracelets sitting over the wrist at the right edge of the frame.

Pell had drawn the skyline on the back of the rent book, the way he drew everything he could not afford to visit: quickly, in one unbroken line, so the pen never lifted. The wheel came first, then the spires of a cathedral he had seen once on a school trip, then the lattice tower, which he said looked like a sewing basket balanced on a stool. Two balloons went above it, because a sky with nothing in it made him nervous.

His daughter Ruth found the drawing in the drawer under the chip shop till on a Tuesday in October, when the fryer had gone cold and the rain was loud on the shutters. She was twelve. She asked him where the wheel was. He said it stood on the far bank of a river he had never crossed, which was true, and that the balloons were there because somebody always has to be going up while everyone else stays down. She asked whether he had been to any of them. He said he had been to the one with the tower, once, on a coach that broke down outside Dover, and that the driver had sung the whole way home to make up for it.
Pell kept the shop open for thirty-one years. When the lease finally ended, Ruth took the rent book home and found, on the last page, a second line added in blue biro: a small wheel at the far end with empty seats turning, and beneath it, in his square capitals, GO ON THEN.
