Mountain skyline outline on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single unshaded black outline traces a jagged row of mountain peaks that wraps around the ankle, with the tallest summit near the centre. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, so the tattoo reads as a simple silhouette against the skin. The photo is taken from the front of the leg, with rolled up blue denim at the top of the frame and a dark grey surface beneath the foot.

Every Saturday the men came over the pass to Scarrow Hall with their boots still wet, and every Saturday old Tomas Greave tuned his fiddle to the ridge he could see through the back window. He said the peaks were a tune written in stone, seven notes rising and falling from the Sheep Gate to Black Nab, and nobody in the valley had ever heard him play it right.

His daughter Ellen washed the glasses and listened. She noticed he always stopped short at the tallest point, where the ridge leapt up like a held breath, and he would lower the bow and say that note was not his to take. The dancers stamped on regardless. The farmers' wives swung their skirts and the lamps swung with them, and the ridge kept its shape against the dark glass.
One night in November, when snow had come down the flanks of Black Nab and nobody expected a dance, Tomas lifted the bow to the window and played straight up the line, stone by stone. The floor stopped. Ellen said afterwards that the whole row of peaks seemed to lean in to hear. At the top he held the note until his arm shook, then let it fall gently down the far side, and the hall breathed out.
In the morning the frost on the back window had melted in a single line, the exact outline of the ridge, and it stayed there until spring. Ellen would stand and trace it with her finger, and when people asked what it was she said it was the tune, and that her father had finally got the note.
