Clasped hands and flower on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A bold tattoo of two clasped hands sits centred in front of a pink scalloped flower, with dark teal and black leaves fanning out behind. Thick black outlines define the shapes, and the hands are softly shaded in pinkish tones. Orange and black accents on either side frame the design, which fills the width of the forearm.

The ferryman at Holm Crossing had a rule about handshakes, and everyone in the village knew it. You shook a hand only once you meant to keep it. So when Maud Ferrier came down to the slipway with her father's old oar over one shoulder and a stranger's glove in her pocket, the ferryman looked at the glove first and her second.

"It's not mine," she said. "It came off the sill of the upper house. The woman who lived there has gone to her sister's in Carlisle, and nobody has written to say whether she'll come back." She held out the glove as though it might bite. "I thought you should have the keeping of it, since you keep everything else."
The ferryman took it, turned it over, and gave her back a hand instead, warm and rough from the rope. They stood like that a while, the oar between them and the tide coming in over the stones. Behind the ferryman's shed a red dahlia had gone to seed beside the dark leaves of a holly that nobody had pruned in thirty years, and the wind worked through them both.
"Then we'll see who comes for the glove," he said. "Whoever wants it badly enough will ask at the crossing. They always do." He let go of her hand and tucked the glove under the thwart, where the wet could not reach it. Maud took the oar to the boat, and the ferryman, watching her go, noticed that the dahlia had opened in the time it took her to cross the slip.
