Colour traditional-style tattoo of a cat face with red poppies and blue flowers, placed on the upper thigh.

Cat face with poppies on a thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cat face with orange and gold fur markings, framed by a large red poppy and a small green bud at the top. Blue and turquoise flowers sit on the cheeks, pink flowers appear on the ears, and a pink nose and black whiskers add detail. Bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour fill the design, which is shown centred on the upper thigh against plain skin.

Dear Jan,

I know you said you would not come, and I know you meant it, but I am writing anyway because the reunion has left me with a cat on my mind. You will remember Mr Halloran's tabby from Cressy Road, the one that sat on the wall outside the chip shop and looked at us as if we owed it money. Well, it turned up at the hall on Saturday, under the trestle tables, with a poppy tucked behind one ear that somebody had pinched from the Remembrance wreath.

Nobody could say who had let it in. Brenda from the year above swore it belonged to the caretaker, and the caretaker swore it had come in with Ken Pritchard, who has never owned anything with whiskers in his life. We found it eventually asleep in the coat pile, purring at Gerald's anorak as though it had been expecting him.

I did not say much to anyone that evening, but I did think of the poppies on the verge behind the old gasworks, where we lay on our backs in the summer of 1979 and swore we would leave this town and never come back. We did leave, mostly. The cat, it seems, never did.

When I went to fetch my coat at half ten, the tabby was sitting on the step with its eyes shut, blue flowers at its cheeks like a guest who had stayed too long at a wedding. I gave it a biscuit from the tea urn. It looked at me for a long while, then at the hall door, then went back in to finish the sausage rolls.

Write soon. Tell me you have not got a cat now too.

Love, Maureen
