Clasped hands forming a heart on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two hands held together, with their outlines and fingers forming the shape of a heart. Bold, even black linework defines the fingers, knuckles and nails, and the background areas around the hands are filled solid black. The design is in black ink only, set against pale skin on a dark background.

He came over anyway. "You're not dancing with the bandleader's nephew, then," he said. She told him the nephew had two left feet and a mouth to match. Frank laughed, held out his palm, and she took it, feeling the hard ridge at his thumb where the dock rope had worn it. The floor filled up behind them. Someone switched off the lamps at the far end to save power, and the hall went dark except for the amber glow from the bar.
In the half-dark, their hands seemed to find a shape of their own. Her fingers slid between his, his thumb pressed against her knuckles, and the two palms angled up to meet at the wrist like the top of a valentine. Dorothy caught it from the corner of her eye, the black shadows pooling around them until they made a heart out of nothing but two hands. "Look at that," she said. "We're a card from the newsagent's."
Frank didn't look. He was watching her. When the band reached its last bar and the lights came back up, he didn't let go, and neither did she. The heart stayed folded between them until the caretaker started stacking chairs around their feet.
