Sit closer, the fire only seems shy when people hang back. Right, where was I? Ah, the hand. Everyone in Calderon wanted to know why the cook from the Marshal's kitchen kept curling her fingers at the river gate.

Her name was Ilse Varrow. She had two brothers on the far bank, sent to the salt mines for singing the wrong anthem at a wedding. The gate guards read everything: the wax on a letter, the stitching of a hem, the way a loaf was scored. So Ilse learned to speak with the one thing nobody thought to search. She folded her thumb under her first two fingers, lifted the knuckles to her lips, and let the heart take shape in the air above them.

Every market morning for eleven winters that crooked hand went up over the bridge, and every morning a grey gull lifted from the mill roof to answer it. The guards laughed. They said the cook had a bird problem.

Then came the spring the king ordered the river walls whitewashed, and a painter on a scaffold noticed that Ilse's hand was always the last thing in the crowd to come down. He climbed down, very politely, and asked her what she was saying. Ilse wiped her palms on her apron and told him it was the cook's sign for too much salt in the broth. He laughed and climbed back up his ladder. That evening the gull went up from the mill roof as usual, and the brothers on the far steps raised their hands. The painter, who had nothing to do with any of it, was left staring at a dark heart drifting over the water, and he never painted it out.
