Clasped hands in a heart with flowers

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A tattoo of two hands clasped together inside a red heart with a scalloped outline, framed by two orange-centred flowers with teal leaves. The hands are shaded in grey with black linework, and a gold band appears on one wrist. Bold black outlines and flat, saturated colour give it a classic traditional look against the skin.

Gather in close, the lot of you, the generator's coughing and the candyfloss man has gone home, so you'll have to make do with me. Ada Pell ran the coconut shy on this fair for thirty summers, and she never once let a child walk off with a prize she hadn't weighed first. Joe Verity walked the high wire above her stall, and every evening at six he'd look down at her over the rope and tip his cap, and every evening she'd pretend she hadn't seen.

One wet September the wire snapped in a gust off the marsh and Joe came down hard in the sawdust with his wrist bent wrong. The doctor from the town said he'd not walk a rope again. Ada didn't say a word. She simply sat on an upturned crate beside his cot in the lorry, took his good hand in hers, and held on the way you'd hold a rail on a bucking ferry. The brass bangle she'd won at the rifle gallery the year they met knocked against his knuckles every time she shifted.

He mended slowly. By spring he could manage a slack rope behind the church, and by the next season he was back on the wire, arms out, swaying like a question nobody dared answer. Ada kept her crate by the ticket hut all summer, and nobody on the fair ever told her to shift. Look at the lorry parked by the generator, the one with the red heart on its door and the orange flowers spilling out round it. Joe painted that himself, badly, and she still won't let him touch it. Every evening at six the bangle catches the lamplight, he tips his cap, and she pretends she hasn't seen.
