Grey shaded VW Beetle tattoo

Realism · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a Volkswagen Beetle viewed from the front three-quarter angle, with the VW logo partly cropped at the top of the frame. The car is rendered with smooth grey shading, soft highlights on the bodywork and dark tones in the windows and wheel arches. The design is in black and grey only and fills most of the frame against a plain skin background.

Sit closer, the lamp's guttering and the rain's come in off the river, so you'll have to take my word for the colour. Grey, like the underside of a gull's wing. That was the Beetle Tomas Varga kept behind the tannery on Wick Street, round at the back the way a loaf is round, with a rust-eaten sill he swore was the only honest thing about it.

It would not start for anyone but him. Every night at eleven the engine coughed twice, the headlamps woke on their own, and the car rolled out past the boarded-up fish market to wait under the iron bridge where the last trams turned. The men who drank at the Crown said it was waiting for someone. They were right, though they never said who.

In the November fog, when the streetlamps were only smudges, a girl called Irena came running along the quay with a shopping bag split at the handles. Her brother had not come home from the shipyard. She was going the wrong way and knew it, and she didn't care. The passenger door was already open when she reached it. Inside, the seats smelt of oil and cloves, and the radio, silent for thirty years, hummed a song her grandmother used to sing over the washing.

Tomas never drove it again after that night, though he kept the keys in his coat. The car drove itself to the shipyard gates at dawn and idled until the night shift came out, and there, in the blue-grey light, her brother walked towards its headlamps as though someone had called him by name. Irena said the wipers ran once across the glass, slow as a blink, before the engine fell quiet. Every grey morning since, the bonnet has been warm.
