VW camper van and flowers on an upper arm
Japanese · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a blue Volkswagen camper van seen from the front, with its windscreen, headlights and badge clearly drawn, surrounded by swirling grey waves, purple plumeria and a large pink blossom. Bold black outlines define the forms, with smooth shading on the van and waves and layered tones on the petals. Red and orange cloud shapes fill the background behind the van, and the design wraps around the shoulder and upper arm.

Dad parked the Volkswagen across two bays of the Marine Ballroom car park at Sandmouth, nosed toward the promenade so the spray could reach its headlights. Mum said he would have it repainted the day he stopped driving it, and he never gave her a reason to be right.

Inside, the band was already into its third waltz and the floor smelled of Brasso and wet wool. Mum wore the green dress she had sewn from a curtain, and she danced with a lifeboat man who kept glancing past her at the tall windows, where the sea was turning the colour of pewter under a sky like the inside of a peach. Every few bars the whole room shivered as a swell hit the sea wall.
At the last waltz the lights dipped and the lifeboat man went out to check his boat. Dad came and found me by the cloakroom, holding a fistful of pink hibiscus he had picked from the wall of the hotel next door. He said the van would take us as far as we liked, provided the tide let it, and that Mum had already agreed to be the one who decided where.
We drove out past the harbour with the windows down and the foam blowing in over the bonnet, and Mum tucked a purple plumeria behind my ear the way she used to before church. Nobody in the van said anything about the storm. The waves kept pace with us all the way to the lighthouse road.
