Clock, pocket watch and map on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm sleeve shows a clock face with Roman numerals, a pocket watch, a large key and a map with fine grid and bearing lines. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft greys giving the metal and paper a three-dimensional look. The design fills the arm from wrist to elbow against a blurred, pale background.

The clocks in the Survey House of Carrow had all stopped at a quarter past four, and nobody in the scullery would say who had stopped them. Ilse Vantry, sixteen and newly bound to the map room, found the whole building holding its breath when she came in with the lamp oil. Master Dace stood at the long table with his spectacles pushed up and a chart pinned flat under four brass weights, its bearing lines running edge to edge like cracks in old ice.

The chart showed the south coast, the kingdom's last true survey before the Queen's men redrew the bays. Dace had ruled every line himself. "Three of the coves are wrong," he said. "Not the shapes. The times. Someone has been measuring the tide against the wrong clock." He tapped the great iron key hanging on the wall hook, the one the old Keeper had carried, its bow worn smooth by thumbs. The Keeper's pocket watch was still in the bottom drawer of his desk, ticking faintly, because nobody had had the heart to wind it or let it run down.
Ilse spent the night with the watch in her palm, comparing its small face against the wall clock's Roman numerals and tracing the coastline with a fine nib until her wrist ached. Near midnight the coves lined up. The sea had been arriving an hour earlier than any table admitted, and the error was not the sea's but the Keeper's. He had kept a private hour for himself and recorded only the honest one.
At first light she wound the pocket watch, set its hands to the harbour bell, and left the drawer open so the sound could reach the stairs.
