Cloud with falling hearts on the side ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an outlined cloud with a scalloped edge and five small solid black hearts arranged below it, suggesting falling rain. The linework is thin and even, and the hearts are filled in with solid black ink. The design is small and centred on smooth, lightly reddened skin, with a white fabric edge visible at the right of the frame.

The hall at Thornbeck had a roof that leaked, so on dance nights the men pushed the benches to the walls and set buckets under the drips. Nobody thought much of it until the summer the fiddler Ada Pim began to cry while she played. She cried quietly, the way a kettle hisses before it boils, and the tears did not fall on her cheeks. They fell from the rafters as little black hearts, and they landed in the buckets with a sound like sleet.

Her mother said it was the damp. Her father said it was the Harker boy, who had gone to the coast and not written. The parish clerk, who kept a book of such things, said nothing and wrote down that the bucket water tasted sweet.
Ada stopped crying when she was seventeen, though nobody ever learned why. Some said she had decided the boy was not worth it. Old Mrs Gell, who had lived beneath the church for longer than anyone could say, swore it was the reverse: the hearts had gone up into the sky, and it was rain they were waiting to become, and one day a cloud would come over the hall and let them all down at once.
That autumn the cloud came, low and scalloped as a sheep's fleece, and it stopped over the hall while the dancers were still inside. The door opened. A young man stood on the step with his cap in his hands, soaked to the skin, and Ada put down her bow and said his name as if she had been holding it in her mouth for years.
