Cloud, umbrella and dress on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm carries several separate black ink motifs: a stippled cloud at the top, an open umbrella, a figure in a long dress, and a striped cup or pot at the base. The cloud is built from fine dots that create soft shading, while the umbrella and figure use outlined shapes with lighter interior detail. The black and white photograph is taken close up against a plain light background, with a dark sleeve at the right edge.

The rain came to Hollin Row every Thursday, and old Mabel Crane never once went out without her black umbrella, even when the sky above the allotments was bare blue. The village thought it a foolish habit. Then the grey cloud would swell over the beans at noon, heavy as a wet fleece, and Mabel would walk out in her long dress, open the umbrella over her own head, and stand very still among the rows.

Nobody asked her why. Tom Ashby, who was nine and nosy, asked her once, and she only pointed at the striped cup on the garden wall. It was her mother's, chipped at the rim, and she filled it each week from the kettle and set it on the path. "The cloud drinks what it's owed," she said. "I'd rather it drank tea than took the lettuces."
That Thursday the cloud came low and sulky, and Mabel was late. Tom watched from the hedge as the first fat drops fell on the lettuces, and the cup on the wall stayed dry. He ran to the kitchen, filled the cup with cold water from the tap, and carried it out with both hands, slopping it down his shorts. Mabel took it from him without a word and poured it onto the soil between the beans.
The cloud thinned to a single curl and drifted off towards the reservoir. Mabel folded her umbrella, shook it once, and left it leaning by the gate. Tom found the cup back on the wall the next week, full to the brim with rainwater, and no one in the village ever again saw the lettuces touched by weather.
