The apples were coming down faster than the pickers could gather them, and Ada Vell had stopped counting at nine hundred when the first star dropped into the Long Orchard. It hit the grass like a dropped pan lid and lay there hissing, its six points still sharp enough to nick a thumb. Her brother Tom came running with a sack over his shoulder, took one look, and said they should leave it be until the frost.

Ada would not leave it. She knelt, lifted it in her apron, and found it warm as bread from the oven. It asked her, in a voice like a kettle just before it sings, whether there was a high place where the sky could see it. The second star came down in the pear rows before she could answer, larger than the first and sulking about it. The third fell near the gate, small and quick, and went straight into the windfalls as if it had been waiting all summer to be somewhere else.
They were too heavy for one woman and one sack, so Ada climbed the old codlin tree and wedged the big star in the fork of the highest branch. Tom hauled the middle one up the orchard wall on a rope, swearing the whole way. The little one asked, very politely, to go last, because it had always been the last to rise over the hill and did not see why that should change now. So Ada carried it home in her apron pocket and sat with it on the back step until the swifts were gone.
When the stars lifted, one after another in the blue dusk, the orchard went quiet except for the slow thud of ripe fruit. In the morning Tom found three pale rings pressed into the grass, set in a loose diagonal, and the wasps would not cross them.
