Five outlined stars in a cascading line
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows five five-pointed stars drawn as thick black outlines with hollow centres, arranged in a diagonal trail that narrows from a large star at the top to a small star at the bottom. The linework is uniform and bold with no shading, and the design is in black ink only on a plain white background. The stars are spaced unevenly, which gives the composition a sense of movement from top left to bottom centre.

Mind the step, the lift's been broken since Easter, so we walk. Fourteen floors, and my knees have opinions about every one. Sit down, the lot of you, and pass that bag of crisps round properly before I start.

Five stars came down over Brackenhall the winter they knocked the old Crown down. The big one came first, proud as you like, clipping the top of the car park lamp. The next bumped off the wheelie bins behind Ashworth House. Then three small ones, one after another, and the last so tiny it dropped into the gap beside the bus shelter, where nobody looked but a dog.
Now here's what folk forgot. Stars don't fall for nothing. The big one wanted a roof. The second wanted a bench to sit on. The third wanted quiet, which nobody gave it. The fourth wanted someone at a window to look up at it. And the littlest only wanted to be looked for. The old fella in flat nine told me so, and he should know, he counted them from his balcony every night for a year.
So they climbed the blocks one at a time, knocking on windows. Some folk let them in. Some drew the curtains. If you're up on the fourteenth floor after dark, count them. Five, if you're lucky. Four if the little one's still down in the bus shelter, waiting for someone to fetch it.
