Coffin and roses in black and grey

Traditional · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A coffin with a raised cross sits diagonally across the design, with two black roses at the top and bottom, each surrounded by leaves and curling tendrils. The coffin's lower section is filled with a fish-scale pattern, and the bold outlines contrast with solid black shading and white highlights. The image is a collage of three photographs showing the tattoo from different angles on smooth skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The parcels clerk at Hollin Junction has one rule about coffins: they travel in the fish van, never with the mail. You learned that in your first week, along with the fact that a box of Scarborough kippers smells worse than anything dead. So when the old woman in the good wool coat wheels a black coffin under the canopy at six in the morning, you already have the chalk in your hand and the manifest on the clipboard.

"Mind the scales," she says, tapping the lower panel with a gloved finger. "Ted cut every one himself. A scale a night, the winter he couldn't sleep. He said it was the only thing on land that looked like the sea."

The lid carries a brass cross screwed flat at its centre, and a black rose worked at each end, their leaves slicing outwards like cut paper. Thin curls lift from the petals as though something under the wood is still breathing. You write her name on the tag, then Grimsby Dock, then stop over the weight column because there isn't a box for how heavy a man's last trip is.

She doesn't ask you to fill it in. She counts out the fare in coppers, pressed flat and warm from her palm, and sits down on an upturned crate beside the van as if she has a seat booked. The guard swings the door across on its runners. The lamp catches the tendrils one more time before the wheels take up the rails, and you stand on the platform with the clipboard against your chest, watching the black lid shrink into the grey morning until the signal at the far end swallows it.
