Collage of four travel tattoos
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
A four-panel collage of travel-themed tattoos. The top-left panel shows a black outline world map across the upper back, and the top-right shows a forearm with a banner reading Wander Lost, surrounded by mountains and an arrow. The bottom-left shows a small outlined airplane on a back, and the bottom-right shows a compass rose with red and blue accents on a wrist.

The bell over the lock-house has rung twice before dawn, which means the tide has turned early and the tug is waiting on you. You pull on the oilskin, take the brass compass from its hook, and tuck the folded chart under your arm the way your aunt taught you, edges inward so the salt doesn't chew the ink. Out on the mudflats the old continents show as pale ribbons of fused silt, the coastlines of a world nobody has sailed under the same names for two hundred years.

Your job is to keep the outlines honest. Each morning you walk the strand with the surveyor's pole and stake the new shorelines the sea has taken or given back, then carry them up to the drafting room where the great outline map hangs on linen. Someone painted it long ago, black lines on a pale ground, every coast drawn by hand. It is the only thing in the town nobody argues about. You trace the edge of Africa with a fingertip where the water has shifted it a finger's breadth east, and you feel obscurely guilty, as though you have altered a family photograph.
Yesterday a boy from the tug brought you a scrap of card printed with a silver aeroplane, found in a cracked hangar up the estuary. He wanted to know whether anyone still flew. You told him no, then unrolled the chart and showed him the faded banner in the margin, WANDER in capitals over the word LOST, and the compass rose beneath them, its red point still bright after all this time. He squinted at the words for a while. 'Which one's the instruction?' he asked. You didn't have an answer, so you gave him the pole and sent him down to the shore to stake the new line of the coast.
