Matching couple tattoos in a four-photo collage

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

This collage shows four photographs of matching couple tattoos on different body parts. Two wrists carry a fine line script reading to, an infinity symbol and and beyond, with a red accent on the final word, and two hands display small black Mickey and Minnie Mouse designs. Two forearms show MRS with Minnie ears and MR with Mickey ears in black ink, and a black linework silhouette of two figures kissing sits on a lower leg against a red background.

Sit closer, the fire is only just awake and so am I, more or less. You want the one about the road that would not end, in the kingdom of Hallowmere, which never appeared on any map because the mapmakers kept losing their nerve at the coast.

Tobias Quill, a cartographer's boy with ink to his elbows, fell in love with Ada Brisk, who sold hot chestnuts at the bridge gate. Every evening he walked her home along the Loop Road, which curved so tightly through the orchards that it crossed itself three times. At each crossing he drew a figure eight in chalk on the cobbles and said, to infinity and beyond, and she laughed and told him the beyond was the part that needed paying for.

Then the king's clerk arrived with a ledger and a stamp, and asked which of them was the husband and which the wife, since the register had only two boxes and the lady insisted on a proper title. Tobias said he would be Mister and she would be Missus, and the clerk inked them both so black it looked drawn in one long breath. The mouse-eared badges the children made for the wedding feast were the only decoration the clerk approved of.

On the morning they meant to leave for the coast, the Loop Road had vanished. Ada found the chalk figure eights worn smooth, and Tobias's map showed nothing but the crossings, all sealed with the same ink. They walked the orchards for a week, and it was always the crossings that brought them back to the bridge gate. Some say the road was never lost at all; it was only waiting for two people willing to keep choosing the same corner.
