Collection of black dragon designs
Japanese · Black and grey · Flash
A flash sheet of thirteen black silhouette dragons arranged in rows on a white background. The dragons vary in pose, with coiled, serpentine and circular bodies, some with flames, whiskers, fins or wings. The designs are solid black fills with no shading or colour, and the spacing is even across the sheet.

Ruth Calloway had been breaking ice on the water trough since five, and the ewes were crowding the gate as if they knew something she didn't. The frost had come down in the night and laid itself over the top bar in long black scales, though when she touched them they were only rime, melting into her glove. Her father had said the old dragon of Hollin Fell came down in hard winters to drink from the becks, and that you left the gate open for it. That was nonsense, and she left it open anyway.

By the time the light was grey over the byre, the sheep had gone quiet. Something had moved along the far wall of the field, a long coil of dark that rose and fell like a rope being drawn through water. Flames lapped from its neck in fins that the wind didn't seem to touch. She stood with the bucket against her hip and did not run, because running would have meant admitting she believed it.
It came to the trough and lowered its head. Its eye was like a wet stone, patient and ashamed of nothing. It drank the thawed water down in long swallows, then turned, slow as a tide, and curled itself into a ring around the empty hay bales, tail tucked under its own chin, settling like a dog that had walked a long way.
Her father came out at eight with the torch and found her sitting on an upturned crate, the gate wide open, the ring of black ground steaming in the first sun. He didn't ask. He only took the second bucket from her hands and said the kettle was on, and that the beast would want feeding before the frost came back. Ruth looked at the scorched circle in the grass and thought that next winter she might leave two gates open.
