Neo-trad style tattoo of three bold feathers in teal, purple and red with dark outlines, on the outer thigh of a reclining person.

Coloured feather tattoo on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A bundle of three feathers tied at the quill end, with a fine ribbon or cord wrapped around the base. The feathers are filled with patterned detail, including scallops, dots and stripes, and are outlined in dark ink. The tattoo is coloured in teal, purple, red and yellow against the skin, and sits centrally on the outer thigh in a photo taken from a low angle on a sofa.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The third feather would not lie flat, so Maren pressed it under the heel of her hand and counted the ribbon turns the way her teacher had taught her, one for the spine, one for the hope. Outside the cistern roof the wind was carrying grit from the old reservoir beds, and the lamp oil was low enough that she had to work by the window. Every bundle that left Tessaly Post had to be tied tight enough to survive the drop from the gantry, and loose enough that a stranger with cold fingers could unwind it.

The feathers came from the dye-houses downriver: teal from the kingfisher trade, violet from crushed mussel shell, a red that ran when wet and a yellow that never faded. Maren had painted scallops and dots along the vanes that morning, because the post-riders liked a pattern they could recognise in a dark tunnel. Her brother Tobiah had rowed a skiff across the flood to deliver the last batch and had not come back. The shipping ledger listed his bundle as returned, unopened, with a single line in a clerk's hand: no recipient found.

She wrote to the coastal town on the spare sheet, the one with a water stain shaped like a boot. She did not sign it. She told them about the knot her mother used to tie, a double loop that opened with one pull, and asked whether anyone on the far shore still painted feathers that way. Then she sealed the bundle, wrapped the cord twice, and carried it up the ladder to the gantry where the wind was loudest.

The rider took it without a word and strapped it to her saddle. Maren watched until the speck was gone over the salt, then climbed down to find the lamp had guttered out. In the dark she felt along the tray and found one loose violet feather, left over from the morning. She tucked it behind her ear and went back up, because the next bundle was already waiting, and somewhere a reply might be on its way.
