Coloured transit map lines across a foot
Fine line · Other · Colour · Photo
Thin, multicoloured lines in blue, green, orange, pink, red and purple run diagonally across the top of a bare foot, with a few short horizontal and angled segments meeting at junctions. The linework is crisp and even with flat colour fills, and the design sits in the centre of the foot against a beige carpet. The composition shows the full toe line and the upper foot in soft, natural light.

Twelve routes in all, drawn for a town of eleven thousand people who mostly walked.

The trouble that spring was the gasworks. Alderman Pyke wanted a stop there, which meant the pink line had to double back under the rail bridge, and the red one had to step sideways to meet it without crossing anything. Edith spent three evenings with a set square and a cup of cold tea, rubbing out and starting again until the paper was thin as a bus ticket and the junction sat exactly where a man could find it with his finger.
Her nephew Tommy, sixteen and useless with a compass, watched from the high stool. On the Friday he asked why the lines bent at all, when a straight line would get you there faster on paper. Edith capped the pen and told him a map only had to be true about the one thing that mattered, which was where you could change your mind. Then she sent him to the bus depot with the final sheet.
On Saturday she rode every route herself, from the first bus to the last, and got off at the gasworks to eat a bun on the kerb while the pink line ran on past her into the dusk.
