Fine line wave and animal outline on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black line winds up the outside of the ankle, and a small outlined figure resembling an animal head in profile sits on the top of the foot. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The foot is shown at a side angle on a dark background, with the tattoo filling the lower half of the frame.

I was twelve the year the snow stayed late and my father sent me up to the high fold with the last of the ewes. The fox was there before me, sitting on a flat stone where the water thinned enough to step across. Her head was turned away, ears flat, the way a dog looks when it has already decided you are no threat. She did not run. I sat down on the cold grass and we watched the ewes pick their way over the gully one by one.

When the light went amber she stood, stretched her forelegs, and went down the bank without looking back. I followed the stream to the valley floor the way she had shown me, and found my father's lamp burning in the lower hut, the ewes already bedded, the count right. He asked where I had been. I told him I had walked the water home. He nodded as though that were an ordinary answer, and I have never known whether he believed me or only loved me enough not to ask.
