Abstract watercolour splash tattoo on the foot

Other · Colour · Photo

A bare foot is photographed on a plain white background, with an abstract design of loose brushstrokes across the top of the foot and toes. The strokes are blue, yellow and green with small red dots and flicks, and the edges are soft and irregular. The colour is bold and fills most of the visible skin, with the design spreading from the ankle area towards the toes.

The tin lid had been bent by the cat, so when Doreen Ash knocked the trestle on the Thursday before the regatta, the cobalt went everywhere except where she wanted it. It hit the canvas, the floorboards, the rung of a stepladder and, somehow, the sleeve of the stage manager's good cardigan. Yellow followed, then the green she had mixed for weed, then a fleck of red from the brush she had flicked in irritation.

The backdrop was for The Mermaid of Saltcombe, a show the pier theatre had staged every August since before the war. Tobias, her apprentice, stood with a palette knife and asked whether he should scrape the mess back to primer and start again. Doreen told him to leave it. She had been painting sea for forty years and had never once got the sea to move the way a spilled pot did.

By morning the splashes had dried into something that looked less like an accident and more like weather: a blue current pulling across the lower sky, a yellow flare where the sun might be coming up, red dots scattered like sparks off a boat. Ruth, who ran the company, stood in the wings and declared it a shoal of fish. Doreen let her have that. They painted the rest of the sea around the mess, and on opening night a man in the third row was heard to say the waves looked as if they had been caught mid-splash.

Afterwards Doreen sat on the pier rail with turpentine on a rag, working blue from the heel of her hand. She decided the stain could stay until Monday. It was the only thing she had painted all summer that she hadn't planned.
