Roses and padlock tattoos on crossed forearms

Traditional · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two people with heavily tattooed arms are pressed together, with hands and forearms crossing the frame. The tattoos include a shaded grey rose on the back of a hand, a pink-red rose on the wrist, and a teal heart-shaped padlock on the chest, all with bold black outlines typical of traditional work. The warm, soft lighting gives the image a close, intimate composition, and the colour ink is balanced against grey shading.

Now sit down, the pair of you, and mind the wasps, because this is the part where the key goes in the cider vat. It was the last week of August, the Pryce orchard hanging heavy with Discovery apples, and Tom Lusk stood at the bottom gate with his hands in his pockets while Ada Pryce pitched a small brass key over the rim of the vat as though she were feeding a hen.

"That's the lot, then," she said. "Lock's on the gate and the key's in the cider. You'll have to climb the wall like a burglar." He could have argued. Forty years of courting had taught him that Ada's arguments were never the point. The padlock was heart-shaped and painted teal by her brother, who had a steady hand and no sense, and it hung from a chain she had wound through the rambling rose on the gatepost the spring they were married. Every August since, she had threatened to lock him out with it, and every August he had laughed and let her.

This year he did not laugh. The rose had gone dark pink over the wall, the wasps were drunk on windfalls, and Ada's hands were thinner than he liked as they rested on the vat's cool oak. Tom took the hacksaw from the shed, cut the chain without a word, and carried the padlock to the house like a man carrying a bird that had flown into a window.

That evening they opened the vat for the first time in a decade. The cider came out cloudy and tasted faintly of iron and honey. Ada found the key by hand, rinsed it under the tap, and pressed it into his palm. "Keep it," she said. "You'll be the one who needs to get in."
