The rain came down on Saltergate market the week the locksmith's boy stopped whistling, and the rose seller set her buckets under the awning as she always did. Pink roses for the living, grey for the dead, and nothing at all for anyone who came without coin.

A stranger came past the fish stalls with a brass padlock hanging on a cord around his neck. It had no key. He said his grandmother had locked her heart inside it before the war and thrown the key into the canal, and he wanted it opened before the rain turned the brass green. The rose seller told him she sold flowers, not keys. He laughed and said everyone on the market knew a rose seller could cut a key from a thorn if she chose.

She looked at the padlock for a long while. Then she took a red candle from under the counter, lit it from the stove, and held the flame close to the keyhole until the metal ticked and softened like wax. Rain hissed off the awning. The stranger watched his grandmother's heart, teal as canal water, drip slowly down the cord into his open palm.

By the time the stall lamps were lit, he had gone, and the rose seller was sweeping wet petals into the gutter. The padlock lay on the counter, open, its shackle bent back like a question. She kept it. People always came back for what they had left behind, and the rain never stopped long enough for anyone to forget where the market was.
